Guidelines for writing an argumentative essay

In a student’s academic life, you may encounter an argumentative essay to write about. There is no need to panic. All you need to know about argumentative writing will be discussed in this section. An argumentative essay requires a student to do extensive research to obtain sufficient data and information to learn about the topic and understand different points. By so doing the student can establish a clear thesis to write about.

Structure and outline of an argumentative essay

This refers to the format and order which one must refer to writing an argumentative essay. It includes;


This is the first and most important paragraph in an essay. It defines and identifies the topic that one is writing about. The student must make the reader understand why the topic he/she chose is important. From this general description, a student can then narrow down to introducing the thesis. As you argue out your thesis, it should reflect the place of argument you stand and the pattern in which you will present your ideas. Ensure that your introduction is as interesting as possible to capture the reader’s attention.


When writing, each paragraph should discuss a particular point or idea this ensures that that clarity prevails throughout the essay. As you write, each paragraph must have a logical connection to the thesis introduced in the first paragraph. Evidence gained from the whole research should be provided in all the paragraphs to support the thesis.

In argumentative writing, a student is allowed to have paragraphs that conflicts opinions with the topic this is to mean, you could also consider writing differing points of view regarding the topic. Each paragraph introduces a new idea that relates to the thesis ensure that your paragraph remains precise, and they should flow in as logical manner for easy understanding by the reader.


This is the final section of the essay. It determines the impression the reader would have after reading your work. It is a summary of all the points and ideas right from the introduction to the last paragraph. Note that it does not give room for the introduction of new points rather it sums up all the points in the essay. It also lets the reader know why the topic is important and also gives a chance for one to review the thesis and the main points.
