How to write a descriptive essay

This is a type of essay that engages a student to describe something. It might be an event, emotion, experience or a place. When writing a descriptive essay, the student needs to understand the content of what is described in the essay. All the writings are to be drawn up in a logic and chronological form using descriptive words and in an order of which the events happened. The importance of writing the descriptive essay is; it helps the user to think creatively, therefore, invoking all his five senses to be at work.  For one to write a descriptive essay, there is a certain structure and outline to be followed as described below.


This is usually the first paragraph of the descriptive essay. It should be written in an interesting way because this is the part that will determine whether the reader will like your work or not. An introduction gives a reason as to why the writer is describing the person or object. It also brings the reader to the thesis, therefore; he can speculate what the whole paper would entail.  An introduction is necessary as it allows the writer to describe details of the person or object in a realistic way which helps the reader to create mental images in his mind to bring him close to what you are trying to explain.


A good descriptive essay writing should have three to four paragraphs. The body should be made up of at least a minimum of two paragraphs. A body is important because it is a point where you prove your thesis is correct. Keep in mind that each paragraph introduces a new idea that is related to the thesis. While writing the paragraphs, ensure that the ideas flow in the order of the happenings of the events. Writings should be done in a precise way. Avoid using lengthy sentences for it might bore the reader. Ensure you provide sufficient evidence to defend your thesis.


This is usually the closing paragraph. It tells the reader why you consider what you wrote important. While writing a conclusion, you do not need to introduce new ideas.  Write it in relation to the introduction and the other paragraphs. A conclusion is the overall assessment of all the things you have described in the writing. It summarizes the thesis and tries to reinforce it, therefore, leaving the reader with the impression you wanted to achieve.
